Arno Rafael Minkkinen

Minkkinen captured self portraits in an alternative comtemporary way. Much of his work are self portraits as some of Minkkinen shoots can be dangerous and he doesn't want anyone to risk her lifes for the sake of a good picture he is prepared to risk his own life. He called his work "Self Portraits" so the viewer knows who is in the picture and who took it. Arno Rafael says to think like a camera he says "What the camera sees at the moment of exposure is what I try to envision in my mind. Therein lies the magic of photography for me. It’s why it is always Christmas in my darkroom". He does not use an assistant and he belives if they do the image then it would be their image and not his. Therefore, he uses  a timer on his camera or a shutter realease cable then throws it out of the shot before the camera take an image

I find Minkkinen's work inspirational. Alot of the images I have seen are of close ups and the way his body is positioned give a surreal feel to the image. I would like to achieve this in the studio using dancers.

Below are examples of his work.
